Govt. committed to ensure quality education: Nahid

DHAKA, Oct 31, 2018 (BSS) – Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid today said
the government is firmly committed to provide quality education alongside
ensuring universal access of all aiming to achieve the Sustainable
Development Goal (SDG) – 4.

“In a technology-based globalised world, quality education is crucial for
any country. The government has realised the fact and executed its plans
accordingly,” he said while addressing the inaugural function of Secondary
Education Development Programme in a city hotel, an official release said.

Secretary of Technical and Madrasah Education Division Md Alamgir, Country
Director of Asian Development Bank Manmohan Parkash and Economist of World
Bank Dr Zahid Hossain, among others, addressed the function with Secretary
and Secondary and Higher Education Division Md Sohorab Hossain in the chair.

Nahid said despite a number of challenges, Bangladesh has some remarkable
and praiseworthy achievements in the education sector.

“Distribution of free textbooks among the students of primary and
secondary levels, increased enrolment rate and eradicating gender inequality
in primary and secondary education have already been acknowledged in
different international forums,” he added.

Nahid laid emphasis on taking a single programme through making better
coordination of all development programmes to improve standard of education
at the secondary level.

Nahid said the government has set a target of 30 percent enrolment in
technical education by 2030 aiming to transform Bangladesh into an
economically developed country.

“In 2009, there was only one percent student enrolment in the technical
education while the current enrolment is 14 percent,” he added.

“We are promoting knowledge-based education to develop skilled human
resources to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country. Education without
skills will create a burden for family as well as the nation,” he said.
