Counting underway after peaceful RpCC voting

DHAKA, Dec 21, 2017 (BSS) – Counting of votes is underway after the peaceful polling throughout the day to elect a mayor and councilors in the elections of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC).

The Election Commission (EC) sources said the election was held in a free, fair and festive mood at 193 voting centers which started at 8 am and continued till 4 pm without any disruption.

Awami League-nominated candidate Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu cast his vote at Salema Girls’ High School while Jatiya Party-nominated Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa at Alamnagar Government Primary School and BNP-nominated candidate Kawsar Zaman Babla at Dewantuli Government Primary School polling centres in the morning.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has deployed over 5,500 law enforcers and taken four-tier measures in the RpCC area for ensuring peaceful voting in all 193 polling centres.

A total of 283 candidates, including seven for mayoral candidates, 211 candidates for 33 general councilor posts and 65 candidates for 11 reserved female councilor posts, are contesting in the city polls.
