Women’s participation in mainstream development rises

DHAKA, Dec 20, 2017 (BSS) – Over the years Bangladesh witnessed extensive participation of women in every sector of the society thanks to the government for taking different time-befitting steps for women empowerment.

With the passage of time, jurisdiction of women outside of their dwelling places has increased to a great extent. They are proving their efficiency in every strata of the national life.

They are successfully running the administration and engaging themselves with every profession including trade and commerce, nursing, teaching, healthcare services, journalism, advocacy and law enforcing agencies.

Like other trades, the women upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) are discharging their duties with utmost sincerity and efficiency in Tangail.

Eight upazilas among 12 in Tangail have female UNOs who are successfully spearheading all sorts of development activities in the district.

UNOs Zinat Jahan of Tangail Sadar Upazila, Asma Shahin of Nagarpur, Shahina Akther of Kalihati, Dilruba Sharmin of Gopalpur, Mowshumi Sarker Rakhi of Shakhipur, Israt Sadmin of Mirzapur, Shamsun Nahar Swapna of Bashail and Arifa Siddique of Dhanbari upazila are investing their efforts for the betterment of the grassroots people.

They are taking important decisions in their concerned upazilas and implementing those with the coordination of district administration.

They are playing their due role in maintaining law and order in their areas side by side with successfully implementing the development programmes of the government. They are also demonstrating their managerial capacity both pre and post-disaster situations in their concerned upazilas.

The development porgrammes are being implemented by them including construction of shelter centers, ideal villages and houses and providing asylum to the helpless people through the Union Parishads.

The UNOs, who are working in the top ranks of the upazila administrations, said they are working with the common people and encouraging them to reduce social problems.

Tangail Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zinat Jahan said eight women are working as UNOs in the district.

“I have finished different development works in the Sadar upazila after taking charge as UNO …I do not feel complacent with this as still I have to deal with many unfinished tasks at field level. I always take my job as a challenge and become successful,” she said.

UNO of Sakhipur Mousumi Sarkar Rakhi said, “We do not find any problem in our job as we get all logistic supports from the government.”

Women’s participation at the grassroots administration is increasing widely day by day, she added.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC-General) of Tangail Muhammad Nessar Uddin Jewel said the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is giving more importance to create women-friendly administration.
