‘Youths role vital to make LGIs effective, accountable’

RAJSHAHI, Oct 29, 2018 (BSS)- Role of young generation and members of the civil society is very important for making the local government institutions (LGIs), especially Union Parishad (UP) and Upazila Parishad (UZP), effective and accountable.

Emphasis should be given on strengthening the UPs and UZPs for improving living and livelihood condition through successful implementation of the ongoing projects. So, the youths and leaders of influence should come forward and work together to attain the cherished goal.

Administrative officials and experts unanimously made the observation while addressing a daylong youth and civil society members dialogue at conference hall of Deputy Commissioner’s office here Sunday.

District Administration arranged the dialogue relating to ‘activation of UP Ward meeting and UZP planning Meeting’ in association with Efficient and Accountable Local Governance (EALG) project and United Nation Development Programme (UNDP).

More than 86 persons including administrative officials, UZP Vice-chairmen, UP Chairmen, 30 youths, 15 civil society members and journalists joined the meeting and took part in its open discussion.

Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader addressed the meeting as chief guest with Deputy Director of Local Government Parvej Raihan in the chair. Assistant Director of Local Government Tasnim Jahan, Mohanpur Upazila Vice-chairman Banesha Begum and District Facilitator of LGSP Masud Kabir also spoke.

During his concept paper presentation, Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal, District Facilitator of EALG, presented progress report of the project being implemented in 30 UPs under Bagmara and Mohanpur UZPs.

The project intends to further strengthen the capacities of LGIs and other stakeholders to foster participatory local development service delivery for achieving the SDGs.

DC Abdul Kader says collective efforts of all public representatives concerned and youth and civil society members have become indispensable to make the LGIs pro-people.

He puts emphasis on equipping the youths with modern knowledge for making them worthy citizens. Time has come to generate more youth leadership in the society.

Enriching youth leadership along with their capacity and confidence building is the precondition to generate job opportunities, social development and free the society from gender discrimination and vicious cycle of poverty, he added.
