LGED implements taka 2,205.79-cr schemes in Rajshahi division

RAJSHAHI, Oct 26, 2018 (BSS)-Local Government Engineering Department
(LGED) has been implementing 5,336 schemes under various projects at a cost
of around Taka 2,205.79 crore in eight districts under Rajshahi division.

Of the schemes, 3,820 were completed till last June while implementation
of the rest 1,516 is progressing fast in the districts of Rajshahi,
Chapainawbganj, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Bogra and Joypurhat, said

Implementation of around 500 schemes under rural road and culvert
repairing project, 100 under sustainable rural infrastructure improvement
project, 1,242 under important rural infrastructure development project on a
priority basis, 1242 schemes under important rural infrastructure development
project and 365 under improvement of rural roads, bridge/culvert and other
infrastructure of backward upazilas of northwest region are at the final
stage.

The rural level improved infrastructures have already started reducing
transport cost, improving marketing system, increasing production and
marketing facilities of agricultural products which are contributing a lot to
socio-economic development of the project area.

Roadside tree plantation activities on the improved roads are progressing
successfully that will ultimately help reduce carbon emission at a
substantial level and that is very important to face the adverse impact of
climate change in the vast Barind tract.

Majority works on 282 rural infrastructure development schemes were
completed besides implementation of 1178 rural employment and road
maintenance schemes.

For infrastructure improvement, renovation and maintenance of primary
schools, 866 schemes were implemented. Eighty four new primary school
buildings were constructed where there was no school.

The schemes were undertaken to increase the national literacy rate through
enhancing education facilities at the schools located in remote villages, the
sources said.

Building complexes of 12 union parishads and 18 upazila parishads were
constructed. Implementation of these schemes would in fact further strengthen
the overall activities of local government bodies at the grassroots level.

To enhance the participatory small-scale water resource sector for
irrigation, 98 schemes were implemented at an estimated cost of Taka 39.07
crore.

In addition to implementation of 78 housing schemes for the landless and
distressed Freedom Fighters by spending Taka 7.84 crore, 39Upazila Freedom
Fighters Complex buildings were constructed at total cost of Taka 70.89
crore.

Engineer Ali Ahmed said that the implemented projects have started
contributing enormously to raising standard of living in the remote villages.
