DHAKA, Oct 23, 2018 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today sent Barrister Mainul Hosein to jail in a case lodged over alleged defamation of journalist Masuda Bhatti on television.
Dhaka additional metropolitan magistrate Kaisarul Islam passed the order after holding hearing on his bail plea.
While counsel of Mainul, a former adviser to last military-backed caretaker government, pleaded for his bail, public prosecutor Abdullah Abu and senior lawyer Najibullah Hero opposed his plea.
“Barrister Mainul has committed outrageous crime by insulting a woman journalist on live television,” advocate Abu said, while advocate Hero said, “He insulted womenfolk and an anti-Mainul sentiment has already been created in the country.”
After that the court rejected Mainul’s bail plea and sent him jail.
He was produced before the court by members of detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) around 1pm.
Police arrested him from the Uttara residence of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rob and took him to DB headquarters last night.
Mainul, known for his suspicious role in 1971 and 1975 and during the one-eleven government’s tenure, created a huge outcry in the country as he called Masuda Bhatti a person of loose morals on a live television talk show.
Several cases were filed against him across the country. The police finally arrested him in a case filed yesterday with Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court that issued arrest warrant against him.
