Public-awareness a must for road safety

RAJSHAHI, Oct 22, 2018 (BSS) – Highest importance should be given on
enhancing drivers’ skills, awareness on traffic law and tendency to obey law
among the public in general for road safety.

There is no alternative to awareness to prevent road traffic accidents
which create grave concern.

This was disclosed at a post-rally discussion by a host of speakers who
urged all concerned to work together to bring a desired yield in this regard.

Rajshahi Circle of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Deputy
Commissioner Office jointly organized the discussion at Nanking Darbar Hall
here on Monday to mark the National Road Safety Day-2018.

Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Nur-Ur-Rahman and Commissioner of
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Hafiz Akter addressed the meeting as chief guest
with Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader in the chair.

Superintendent of Police Md Shahidullah, Executive Engineer of Roads and
Highway Md Shamsuzzoha and Deputy Director of BRTA Ashrafuzzaman also spoke.

The discussants unequivocally called for strict enforcement of traffic
rules to reduce road accidents. If the drivers drive their vehicles carefully
the existing number of road accidents could be reduced to a greater extent.

Nur-Ur-Rahman told the meeting that government has taken initiative to
establish training institute in each district to bring the drivers under
training and refreshers training round the year.

Step has also been taken to incorporate the issue of road accident and its
causes and prevention in the course-curriculum besides other various
programmes to reduce the country’s road accidents by 50 percent within the
next 15 years, he added.

BRTA Deputy Director Ashrafuzzaman said the country experiences over 5,000
road accidents every year that claim over 4,000 lives and injure a huge
number of people.

Around 200 persons comprising government officials, human right activists,
leaders of road transport workers and representatives of transport owners
associations were present at the discussion.
