Barishal mayor, councilors take oath

DHAKA, Oct 22, 2018 (BSS) – Newly elected mayor of Barishal City
Corporation (BCC) and its councilors took oath at a function at Prime
Minister’s Office (PMO) here today.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath of Barishal mayor
Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah while the councilors took oath from Minister for
LGRD and Cooperatives Khandker Mosharraf Hossain.

Senior Secretary of the Local Government Division Jafar Ahmed Khan
conducted the oath taking ceremony.

Mayor of Barishal City Corporation and 40 councilors were elected in the
city polls held on July 30, 2018.

In her speech after administering the oath, the prime minister urged the
newly elected mayor and councilors to serve the voters with dedication to
fulfill their expectation.

“You are ‘oath-bound’ to serve the people. So you have to work with
devotion to ensure proper utilisation of every Taka allocated by the
government for development,” she said.

The prime minister thanked the voters of Barishal City Corporation for
casting their votes in favour of the ‘boat’ (election symbol of Awami
League).

She also urged them to ensure victory of ‘boat’ in coming general
elections.

Sheikh Hasina said her government has been trying to regain the glory of
Barishal and rest of the areas of southern part of Bangladesh as a “treasure
of food grain.”

Pointing out her struggle for country’s development over the last ten
years, the prime minister said the elected representatives should work not to
make their own fortune but to change the lots of the people.

Sheikh Hasina said her party came to power in 2009 with a commitment of
change. “Today, you truly feel the change and people are being freed from
poverty,” she said, highlighting the socioeconomic development plan of her
government.

The premier said Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100 has been prepared envisaging
next hundred year’s development plan. “Bangladesh is now a developing country
and we have to make it sustainable to go ahead,” she added.
