Collective efforts to strengthen local government stressed

RAJSHAHI, Oct 22, 2018 (BSS) – Collective efforts of all public
representatives concerned and line departments has become indispensable to
make the local government institutions (LGIs) effective and accountable.

Effective local government institutions especially Upazila Parishad (UZP)
and Union Parishad (UP) are very vital to supplement the government efforts
towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The observation came at a daylong half-yearly review meeting of
‘Efficient and Accountable Local Governance (EALG) project’ held at the
conference hall of Deputy Commissioner’s office here yesterday.

District Administration in association with the United Nation Development
Programme (UNDP) arranged the meeting. More than 85 persons including
administrative and line department officials, Upazila and Union Parishad
Chairmen and their secretaries and other stakeholders joined the meeting and
took part in its open discussion.

Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader addressed the meeting as chief guest
with Deputy Director of Local Government Parvej Raihan in the chair. Upazila
Nirbahi Officer of Mohanpur Anwar-Ul-Halim and Upazila Nirbahi Officer of
Baghmara Jakiul Islam, Upazila Chairman of Mohanpur Abdus Salam, Vice-
chairmen Banesha Begum and Rejaul Karim, District Livestock Officer Dr
Zulfikar Akhter Hossain and Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture
Extension Deb Dulal Dhali also spoke.

During his concept paper presentation, Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal, District
Facilitator of EALG, presented progress report of the project being
implemented in 30 UPs under Bagmara and Mohanpur UZPs.

The project intends to further strengthen the capacities of LGIs and
other stakeholders to foster participatory local development service delivery
for achieving the SDGs.

The meeting discussed and devised ways and means on how to enhance
coordination between the works of UZP/UP and line departments for reaching
the public services to the grassroots people. The meeting also adopted a
work-plan for next six months to attain the cherished goal through overcoming
the existing deficiencies of coordination.

Abdul Kader said all the government and non-government officials and
public representative concerned should work together to make UZPs and UPs
strengthened, efficient and accountable.
