DHAKA, Oct 21, 2018 (BSS) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today urged the election officials to work for protecting the rights of the voters instead of serving the political parties during elections.

“Political parties use to make different recommendations on setting up polling centers. Some of those are logical. But, we have to work for protecting the electorates’ rights instead of serving the political parties,” he said, addressing a training workshop for election officials at Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in the city.

EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed also addressed the programme.

The CEC said measures should be taken so that the voters could exercise their franchise safely.

Positive feedback was received on using Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the upcoming general election after holding exhibition of EVMs in different district across the country, he said, adding,”We have to come out of the previous system where ballot boxes need to be guarded since the night before the polling day.”

But it is not required for EVMs rather it is possible to publish election results in daylight through this modern system, he said.

Huda also said if the political parties agree, the Election Commission can organize training programmes for polling agents to make them more aware about their duties.

About 10 lakh polling agents can be appointed at more than 40,000 polling centers across the country, he added.
