Sheikh Russell’s birthday observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Oct 19, 2018 (BSS) – The 54th birth anniversary of Sheikh Russell, the
youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was
observed here yesterday in a befitting manner.

Russell, the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born
on this day (October 18) in 1964 at “Bangabandhu Bhaban”, the historical
residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman located at Road 32, Dhanmondi
in the capital.

Russell was a class-four student of University Laboratory School when he
along with his most of the family members, including Bangabandhu, was killed
by a group of disgruntled army men on August 15, 1975.

In observance of the day, Sheikh Russell Children Training and
Rehabilitation Centre took elaborate programmes including rally, birthday
cake-cutting, art and literary competitions for the children, prize
distribution and cultural function.

Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed a
function as the chief guest with Deputy Director of Department of Social
Services (DSS) Rashedul Kabir in the chair.

Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi SM Abdul Kader, Divisional Director of
DSS Belayet Hossain, Social Worker Shahin Akhter Rainy and Baya Safe Homes
Superintendent Laizu Akter also spoke.

Later, Liton and other guests distributed prizes among the winners of
the competitions.

District administration organised an arts competition and discussion at
Shishu Academy marking the day.

Sheikh Russell’s birthday was also observed at the Rajshahi University
(RU) in a befitting manner.

The birthday programmes include cake-cutting, discussion, milad and doa
mahfil, rally and cultural competition at Sheikh Russell Model School.

RU Vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan attended the programme as the chief
guest while Director of Institute of Education and Research Prof Abul Hassan
Chowdhury in the chair.

Later, the VC distributed prizes among the winners of the competitions.

RU Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Md Jakaria, Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman and
Principal of the school Momena Zinat were, among others, present.
