President asks UGC to ensure quality research in varsities

DHAKA, Oct 18, 2018 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today asked the
University Grants Commission (UGC) to ensure the quality of research in the
universities to keep pace with the global standards.

“The university authorities must give priority to research works to
survive in a competitive world,” the President said while a UGC delegation
led by its chairman Prof Abdul Mannan submitted the UGC Annual Report-2017 to
him at Bangabhaban here.

The President, also chancellor of the universities, urged the UGC to take
necessary steps to maintain a congenial academic atmosphere in all
educational institutions along with maintaining the quality of higher
education, President’s press secretary M Joynal Abedin told journalists.

During the meeting, the President was apprised by the chairman of overall
activities of the UGC and the progress in implementing different development
projects.

President Hamid was also informed that the universities are imparting
training to the teachers of universities and colleges to improve the quality
of teaching.

The Chairman said that the allocation for research has been increased.
“The allocation for research in fiscal 2008-09 was Taka 10.36 crore which was
increased to Taka 73.30 crore in 2017-18,” he added.

He said that a database named ‘Higher Education Management Information
System’ has been introduced to ensure transparency and accountability in
academic, administrative and financial management of the universities.

Secretaries concerned to the President were present during the meeting.
