Initiative to formulate Right to Food Act stressed

DHAKA, Oct 18, 2018 (BSS) – Right activists at a national seminar here today stressed the need for taking an initiative for formulating the Right to Food Act aiming to ensure food and nutrition security of the country’s 4 crore extreme poor and marginalized people.

They were addressing the seminar titled ‘Development Target of Bangladesh and Justification of Right to Food Act’ held at CIRDAP. Right to Food Bangladesh organized the function.

Though the country has undertaken various programmes to ensure food security, they said adding about 4 crore people, which constitute 12.9 per cent of the total population, have no access to enough food and nutrition.

Food Minister Advocate Qamrul Islam spoke as the chief guest while PKSF Chairman Dr Quazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad chaired the function.

Director General of the Department of Women Affairs Quazi Rawshan Akhter and senior Research Fellow of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) Dr Naznin Ahmed also spoke as the guests of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, the food minister underpinned the need for formulating the Right to Food Act. Following the meeting between the representatives of different organizations and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the government is committed to take appropriate initiatives to this end, he added.
