EU delegation arranges a token cleaning operation in Hatirjheel Lake

DHAKA, Oct 18, 2018 (BSS) -The Delegation of the European Union to
Bangladesh today organized a token clean-up operation in Hatirjheel Lake to
promote the EU’s anti-plastic policy.

Around 40 members of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) joined the staffs
of the EU Delegation, led by Ambassador Rensje Teerink, in this cleaning
drive, said a media release.

In the face of a global concern for plastic pollution, the EU has taken a
strong anti-plastic stance and as its part, initiated various measures to
discourage plastic, not just in the EU but in its partner countries around
the world.

In Dhaka, Hatirjheel is considered by the residents of the city a place to
breathe fresh air. But this beautiful lake is also facing the problem of
littering of plastics and other garbage. This token cleaning drive at the
Hatirjeheel Lake was an effort to generate awareness to protect the Lake from
pollution, the EU said in the release.

In May 2018, the European Commission proposed new EU-wide rules to target
the 10 single-use plastic products most often found on Europe’s beaches and
seas. These new rules are proportionate and tailored to get the best results.
