DHAKA, Oct 17, 2018 (BSS) – Bangladesh has been placed in the103rd position among 140 countries in the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) 2018 released by World Economic Forum (WEF) today.

The country scored 52.1 with an overall increase by 0.7 percentage points this year.

Bangladesh, however, slipped by one notch compared to the 102nd position among 135 countries in the last year as the WEF has revised the methodology for estimating GCI (GCI 4.0) by taking into account changes in global industrial structure, the GCI report said.

Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a partner of WEF, released the report at a press conference at CIRDAP auditorium in the city.

CPD Research Director Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem read out the report in the press conference.

“The overall score of Bangladesh has increased by 0.7 percentage points this year. But due to some changes in the methodology, the position of the country has slipped down slightly,” Moazzem said.

According to the report, Bangladesh witnessed partial progress in terms of infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, health, skills, labour market, market size, ICT adoption and innovative capability. But it lags behind in terms of product market, financial system, institutions and business dynamism.

In the report, the USA ranked top in the 2018 GCI followed by Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Netherlands, Hong Kong, the UK, Sweden and Denmark.

India ranked top among the South Asian countries by advancing five positions (58th) in GCI 2018 with score 62. Sri Lanka ranked 85th with score 56, Pakistan 107th with score 51 and Nepal 109 with score 50.8.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has been publishing the index since 2001.

A total of 12 determinants, including institutions, infrastructure, ICT adoption, macroeconomics stability, health, skills, product market, labour market, financial system, market size, business dynamism and innovative capability, of a country are estimated to make the GCI report.
