World Food Day observed

DHAKA, Oct 16, 2018 (BSS) – The World Food Day was observed in the country and elsewhere across the world today in a befitting manner through organizing various programes.

The theme of the day was ‘Work paves the way for future, work to build a hunger free world by 2030.’

The observance of the day globally was aimed at increased action to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030 set by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and 130 other countries across the world.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages wishing the success of the day’s programmes.

In a message, the President called upon all including scientists and extension workers to pay their attention to inventing stress tolerant crop varieties, technology and extension suitable to adopt with climate change.

He suggested that a safe food zone be built through strengthening the rural agriculture dependent economy by taking into consideration the gradual increase of population and the consequence of climate change.

The Prime Minister in her message put emphasis on nutrition security. “We have already ensured the food security through achieving food autarky …so now we have to engage our efforts in ensuring nutrition,” she said.

The Agriculture Ministry organized a seminar and a three-day fair on the occasion. Besides, a 3-day food fair began at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) to mark the day.
