World Food Day tomorrow

DHAKA, Oct 15, 2018 (BSS) – The World Food Day will be observed in the country tomorrow with an emphasis on forging a technology based sustainable agriculture system for building a poverty and hunger free country by 2030.

The day will be observed globally with a view to tackling the poverty and hunger in line with a call for increased action to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030 set by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and 130 other countries across the world.

The theme of the day is ‘Work paves the way for future, work to build a hunger free world by 2030.’

On the eve of the day, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages wished the Day’s programmes a success.

In a message, the President called upon all including scientists and extension workers to pay their attention to inventing stress tolerant crop varieties, technology and extension suitable to adopt with climate change.

He suggested that a safe food zone be built through strengthening the rural agriculture dependent economy by taking into consideration the gradual increase of population and the consequence of climate change.

The Prime Minister in her message put emphasis on nutrition security. “We have already ensured the food security through achieving food autarky …so now we have to engage our efforts in ensuring nutrition,” she said.

Meanwhile, different organizations will take various programmes to mark the day. The Agriculture Ministry will organize a seminar and a three-day fair on the occasion.

Besides, a three-day food fair will be held at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) at Khamar Bari here from October 16.

In 1979, following a proposal by Dr Paul Romani, a Hungarian scientist, the Day was adopted as “World Food Day” at the 20th General Assembly of FAO.
