International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction observed in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Oct 13, 2018 (BSS) – International Day for Disaster Risk
Reduction was observed in the district today as elsewhere in the country and
the globe with a call to remain always ready to tackle emergency situation
during disasters.

The theme of the day was “Reducing Economics Losses” this year.

Marking the day, district administration chalked out elaborate programmes
in cooperation with Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Project of BDRCS and SRC,
Brac, Friendship, SKS Foundation, GUK, SMS, Caritas Bangladesh, all are non-
government organisations.

The programmes included bringing out rally led by deputy commissioner (DC)
Sebastin Rema from Independence Square of the town and mock drill on rescue
operation during the fire incidents and the time of post earthquakes on the
ground of Gaibandha Govt. College at the management of the personnel of Fire
Service and Civil Defense office.

Later, a discussion meeting on responsibility and duties during fire
incidents and earthquakes was also held on the premises of the college with
principal professor M. Mizanur Rahman in the chair.

Sebastin Rema addressed the meeting as the chief guest and superintendent
of police Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah and additional deputy commissioner
(General) Rokhsana Begum were present at the event as special guests.

District relief and rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali, Sadar upazila
project implementation officer Anisur Rahman, manager of DRM project Golam
Mostafa, SKS representative Ashraful Alam and journalist Sarker M.
Shahiduzzaman also addressed the meeting, among others.

The speakers put emphasizes on expediting disaster preparedness and
creating awareness among the people of disaster prone areas and making them
well equipped in handling disaster moments to reduce the loss of lives and
properties during any natural calamities in future.

Rema said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been
implementing a number of effective measures to reduce risks of different
natural calamities since 2009 and Bangladesh is now became a role model in
combating natural disasters.

Then, the guests formally distributed prizes to the students who stood
first, second and third in the art competition marking the day.

A large number of people including district and upazila level officials,
students, teachers, and activists of different NGOs also attended the
programmes.
