Aug 21 grenade attack verdict ‘historic’: Sherif

ISHWARDI, Oct 12, 2018 (BSS) – Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif today said the verdict in the case for August 21, 2004 grisly grenade attack on an Awami League rally is an ‘epoch-making historic event’.

“The rule of law exists fully in the country. Even after 14 years, the verdict in August 21 grenade attack has been announced in a court of Bangladesh,” he said while exchanging views with journalists at his residence here.

Mentioning the grenade attack as a deep conspiracy to destroy Bangladesh Awami League, Sherif said Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina survived that day by the grace of Allah.

On 21 August 2004, a total of 24 AL leaders and workers, including the then Mohila Awami League President and wife of late President Zillur Rahman, Ivy Rahman, were killed and around 500 others were injured in the monstrous attack.

A court sentenced to death 19 people including former state minister for home affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar and to life imprisonment another 19 including ex-premier Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman on August 21, 2004 grenade attack charges on the 10th October this year.

The court also awarded different jail terms to 11 more accused.
