5 killed, 12 injured in road accident in southern India

NEW DELHI, Oct. 11, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – At least five people have been
killed and 12 others injured after a vehicle carrying them skidded off a road
and plunged into a deep gorge in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu,
police said Thursday.

The accident occurred at Kadamparai in the state’s Coimbatore district.

“The vehicle carrying the victims, all tribals from nearby Mavadappu tribal
settlement, veered off the road and fell into the gorge after its driver lost
control while negotiating a curve late Wednesday night,” a police official
said.

While five people died on the spot, the injured have been admitted to a
nearby hospital, he said. “Two of the injured, including the vehicle’s
driver, are said to be in critical condition,” the official added.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he said, adding that the driver
has been booked for rash and negligent driving.
