Grenade attack case IO for higher punishment of Tarique, some others

DHAKA, Oct 10, 2018 (BSS) – Expressing satisfaction over the verdict in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack cases, investigation officer (IO) Abdul Kahar Akand today said they will take initiatives for enhancing punishment of some accused, including BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman.

“I am satisfied with the verdict as I have got the result of my task,” Akand, additional deputy inspector general (DIG) of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), told BSS when approached for his reaction over phone.

He, however, declined to make any comment over the court verdict, saying, “I will not say anything about the verdict. But, initiatives will be taken through the lawyers whether it is possible or not to enhance punishment of some accused including Tarique Rahman.”

Referring to punishment of all the accused in the verdict, the CID official said, “I have successfully unearthed the mystery behind the attack through my investigation.”

“People who were responsible for planning, attacking, destroying evidences to divert the probe into another direction, helping the killers to escape, and most importantly how the attack was carried out, have been revealed through the investigation,” he added.

“The key target of August 15, 1975, and August 21, 2004 carnages was to eliminate the pro-liberation forces as per the design of the anti-liberation clique,” he added.

A Dhaka special court today awarded death penalty to 19 accused including then BNP’s state minister Lutfozzaman Babar and deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu, life term imprisonment to 19 others including BNP’s acting chairperson Tarique Rahman and various jail terms to 11 more.
