Inflation eases to 5.43pc in September

DHAKA, Oct 9, 2018 (BSS) – The general point to point inflation rate in September last eased to 5.43 percentage point from the previous month due to the slight decrease in food inflation.

“The general point to point inflation rate slightly eased to 5.43 percentage point in September,” said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal today while releasing the monthly consumer price index after the day’s ECNEC meeting.

The general point to point inflation rate in August was 5.48 percent while it was 5.51 percentage point in July down from 5.54 percentage point in June. The general point to point inflation rate in May was 5.57 percentage point down from 5.63 percentage point in April. The general point to point inflation rate in March was 5.68 percentage point while it was 5.72 percentage point in February. The general point to point inflation rate in January was 5.88 percentage point.

According to the data of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the point to point food inflation slightly declined to 5.42 percent in September, 2018 which was 5.97 percent in August, 2018.

After revealing the data, the Planning Minister said the inflation was on the declining trend last month as the price of essentials and food items did not witness price hike side by side there was no mismatch in the demand and supply side.

The BBS data showed that the point to point non-food inflation rate, however, increased slightly to 5.45 percent in September 2018 up from 4.73 percent in August, 2018.

Besides, the general inflation rate at the urban level in September declined slightly to 6.23 percent while it was 4.99 percent at the rural level.

At the rural level, the food inflation came down to 4.86 percent in September from 5.34 in August, while the non-food inflation increased to 5.22 percent in September from 4.51 percent in August this year.

In urban areas, the food inflation also declined to 6.65 percent in September down from 7.39 percent in August. The non-food inflation rate, however witnessed a slight rising trend with 5.74 percent in September which was 5.04 percent in August last.

The national wage index rate witnessed a 6.25 percent growth in September with 156.58 points against 6.38 percent growth in August with 155.50 points.

The average year- to-year rate of inflation from October 2017 to September 2018 increased to 5.68 percent, which was 5.55 percent from October 2016 to September 2017.
