Mahalaya celebrated heralding advent of goddess Durga

DHAKA, Oct 08, 2018 (BSS) – The Bangalee Hindu community in the country as
elsewhere in the world today celebrated the Mahalaya, the auspicious occasion
heralding the advent of goddess Durga.

With the beginning of ‘Devipaksha’, Mahalaya is observed seven days before
Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Bangalee Hindu community.

Mahalaya marks an invitation of sorts to goddess Durga to begin her
journey from Kailash to her paternal home (earth), along with her children.

This invitation is extended through the chanting of mantras from Sri Sri
Chandi and singing devotional songs. Countdown of Durga Puja began with the
celebration of Mahalaya.

On the occasion, Mahanagar Sarbajani Puja Committee arranged special
programmes of Mahalaya at Dhakeshwari National Temple at 5.30am.

The country’s noted singers performed in the programme.

Gulshan-Banani Sarbajani Puja Parishad arranged programmes at dawn on the
Banani ground.

Sanatan Samaj Kalyan Sangha also celebrated the Mahalaya through different
programme at dawn on the premises of Krishibid Institution.

Similar programmes were also arranged in different temples in the capital
city including Ramna Kali Mandir and Dhaka University Jagannath Hall
Upashanaloy and across the country.

On this day, Hindus remembered and paid homage to the ancestors who have
died by performing a puja, and offering Brahmins clothes, food and sweets in
their name.

On October 15, the Durga Puja will begin with different rituals on the day
of Maha Shashthi.
