BTRC seizes 11,000 SIMs for illegal VoIP

DHAKA, Oct 8, 2018 (BSS) – Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory
Commission (BTRC) in cooperation with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has seized
a total of 10,947 SIMs of different operators for conducting illegal call
termination.

In this connection, eight people has been arrested along with VoIP
equipment worth Taka 37 lakh in capital’s different areas, revealed BTRC’s
acting Chairman Md Jahurul Haque at a press conference today at BTRC office.

“SIMs and VoIP equipment have been seized from six residential buildings
in Mohammadpur, Adabar, Badda and Uttara West Thana during raids in September
9 to September 20,” he said.

Of the total SIMs, Teletalk belongs to 5,075 SIMs while Robi and Airtel’s
3,897 SIMs, Grameenphone’s 1,414 SIMs, Banglalink’s 426 SIMs, PSTN operator
Rangstel’s 120 and WiMAX operator Banglalion’s 15 SIMs, Jahurul added.

Mentioning that BTRC is using modern technology to curb illegal use of
VoIP, the acting Chairman said: “Now, detection of specific location of
illegal call termination is being possible using this technology.”

He said the modern technology could help BTRC to save Taka 50 crore more
of government annually from the international call termination.

Replying to a query regarding the total number of illegal call terminated
annually, BTRC Director General Brig Gen M Mustafa Kamal said it’s very hard
to figure out the accurate number of illegal call.

Answering to another question how is the SIM being used even after
biometric registration, Kamal opined obviously operator has a role otherwise
it’s not possible.

Commissioners, director generals and officials concerned were present.
