President urges parties to nominate good candidates for polls

AUSTAGRAM, Kishoreganj, Sept 24, 2018 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today urged the political parties to nominate good candidates for the next general election in the greater interest of the country.

“I urge all political parties to give nomination to good people for the next election in the greater interest of the country and its people,” he told a mass-reception at Austagram Upazila Playground here on the first day of his five-day visit to his home district of Kishoreganj.

Austgram Nagorik Committee hosted the reception as Abdul Hamid paid his first visit to Austagram after taking oath of office as the country’s President for the second consecutive term on April 24.

The head of the state reiterated his request to all political parties to work with consensus for people’s welfare.

“Work together through compromises . . . There would be no confrontation, everything would run smoothly,” he said.

“Holding the chair of the President, I cannot deliver any political speech. But I can say people should take the right decision while choosing their leaders,” he added.

President Hamid called upon the voters to elect people who would not deceive the general public and would never be their master after being elected.

“You must choose a leader who bears a good character, who will keep pre-election commitments and always think of local development and welfare of their people,” he suggested.

The President also asked people’s elected representatives including lawmakers, Union Parishad chairmen and members to engage themselves in ensuring welfare of the people.

Abdul Hamid called upon all to shun any ‘vindictive attitude’ and resolve disputes and find out solutions of local problems through discussions.

“It will help ensure development of different areas and the whole country as well,” he said.

Referring to his political background and 1970 polls, Hamid said he had to face many difficulties to reach the present position. “In the meantime, I lost many of my nearest people and friends … I recall their contribution with due respect and pray for their eternal peace.”

Seeking people’s blessings, he said, “I want to spend the rest of my life for the welfare of the country and people.”

Panel chairman of Kishoreganj Zila Parishad Fazlul Haque Haidari presided over the reception programme.

Engineer Rejwan Ahammad Taufiq, MP, Afzal Hossain, MP, Sohrab Uddin, MP, Kishoreganj Zila Parishad Chairman Advocate M Zillur Rahman, Special PP and Kishoreganj Ainjibi Parishad general secretary MA Afzal, Ainjibi Parishad president Advocate Syed Shahjahan and Austagram Upazila Parishad chairman Shahidul Islam James, among others, also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, the President inaugurated works of seven development projects of Austagram shortly after arriving in the upazila at 2 pm.
