Clean Our Country Day’ observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Sept 15, 2018 (BSS)- The Rajshahi event of “Clean Our Country Day” was observed here today in a bid to encourage cleanliness and protect environment programme.

Hundreds of volunteers participated in a clean-up programme from Alupatty Crossing to Padma Garden amusement park in the city from 11 00 am to 1.00 pm.

More than 100 young volunteers cleaned up open places, residential areas, roads, educational institutions, parks, rivers, and other public and private establishments.

Youths from different social and volunteer organisations, educational institutions and locals participated in the clean-up programme in separate groups.

The volunteers also created awareness among the people and encouraged them to keep their own areas clean throughout the year. “Poriborton Chai,” a social organisation, arranged the programme marking the “Let’s Clean up the Country Day-2018”.

Afterwards, the collected filth and dirty were dumped into the filling point of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) at Borokuthi.

Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi SM Abdul Kader, Principal of Rajshahi College Prof. Habibur Rahman, Divisional Coordinator of Poriborton Chai Atiqur Rahman, Professor Murshida Ferdous Binte Habib from Rajshashi University, cultural personality Kamarullah Sarker and Deputy Chief Veterinary Surgeon of Rajshahi University Dr Hemayetul Islam were present on the occasion.

Abdul Kader said: “Our environment is a testimony to the state of our mentality. We indiscriminately pollute our environment. We know that one day’s cleaning operation is not enough but we have to make an effort to change our habit. We have to remember not only to clean but also to stop throwing garbage to protect our environment”.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness at office premises, institutions, homesteads and open places in the city since cleanliness is a must to keep air fresh and improve environment.

In absence of adequate awareness programmes and coordinated waste management policy of city corporation, people dump wastes and make streets and public places dirty, Kader added.
