Poverty rate decreases by 18pc in 10yrs: Dr Shirin

DHAKA, Sept 12, 2018 (BSS) – Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin
Sharmin Chaudhury today said the rate of poverty has reduced to 22 percent
from 40 as a result of the various development works undertaken by the Awami League
(AL) government in the last ten years.

“The government has executed huge development works alongside taking time-
befitting measures and formulating policies such as setting up 100 economic
zones and generating 20,000 megawatt of power which has helped to reduce
poverty rate to 22 percent,” she said.

She was speaking as chief at the inaugural ceremony of “19th Textech
Bangladesh International Expo-2018, 14th Dhaka International Yarn and Febric
Show-2018 and 33th Dye Chem Bangladesh Expo-2018” at International Convention
City Bashundhara, Dhaka today.

Conference Management Services Ltd and CEMS Global jointly organized the
expos.

“A revolution has been created in the garment industry as the government
has formulated principles and working plans encouraging the garments
industry. The garment industry is now contributing 15 percent to the GDP
(Gross Domestic Products) with amounts to 30 billion US dollar. Bangladesh
has also secured the second position in exporting garment products,” the
Speaker added.

“Massive growth of the textile industry has generated huge employment
opportunity particularly for the women folk alongside contributing to the
economic development of the country,” she added.

“Bangladesh, for the first time in history, has fulfilled the eligibility
criteria to be recognized as a developing country under the dynamic
leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the country will be a
developing country by 2024 and a developed one by 2041. she added.

Bangladesh has become a role model of development in the world,” Dr Shirin
opined.

Among others, Textile and Jute Minister, Mirza Azam, MP, Indian High
Commissioner to Bangladesh, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, FBCCI (Federation of
Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry) President, Safiul Islam
(Mohiuddin), and President of Indian Chamber of Commerce President of Indian
Chamber and Commerce Rudra Chaterjee, among others, spoke on the occasion.
