Boro rice reserve target exceeds

DHAKA, Sept 09, 2018 (BSS) – The government reserved 11.29 lakh metric tons of Boro rice till August 2018, exceeding its procurement target, in the wake of the bumper cultivation of Boro rice this year owing to pro-farmer steps of the government and favourable climate.

The government set a target of collecting 10 lakh metric tons of Boro rice in the current season in view of the bumper production this year.

Talking to BSS, Additional Secretary of the Food Ministry M Omar Faruque said the government already reserved 10.14 lakh metric tons of parboiled rice, 1.03 lakh metric tons of atap rice and 0.19 lakh metric tons of Boro paddy.

The procurement target was 8 lakh metric tons of parboiled rice, 1 lakh metric tons of atap rice and 1.50 lakh metric tons Boro paddy.

As per the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Omar Faruque said the government procured the rice from the internal sources, the highest reserve till date.

“We are also procuring more Boro rice to avert any crisis in case of the failure of achieving the target of Aman cultivation,” he added.
