Justice Mozammel for safe repatriation of displaced Rohingyas

DHAKA, Sept 01, 2018 (BSS) – Former Chief Justice of Bangladesh Md Mozammel Hossain here today pleaded for strong international pressure for a safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.

“In this situation, I think, a safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation of displaced Rohingya is a durable solution to end their plights. There should be clear answer when to start the repartition given the strong international pressure on Myanmar, and the bilateral agreement” he said.

He was addressing a two-day international conference on the “Rohingya: Politics, Ethnic Cleansing and Uncertainty” as the chief guest at Dhaka University (DU).

Department of Criminology of DU organised the conference at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the campus.

Justice Mozammel said, “It is the expectation of the world community including Bangladesh that good sense shall prevail over the government of Myanmar to implement the repatriation agreement with Bangladesh about the displaced Rohingya within two years as agreed between the two countries.”

Earlier, DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the conference where around 50 researchers, academics, lawyers and students from home and abroad are presenting 72 papers in 21 sessions on the Rohingya crisis.

In his speech, Prof Akhtaruzzaman said “We have to stay beside the Rohingya people who have been displaced from their lands forcefully and brutally.”

Kelley Loper, associate professor of the University of Hong Kong, presented the key note speech on “The Rohingya, the search for solutions, and the potential of international human rights law”.

In her speech, Loper said, “The Rohingyas are among the most persecuted people in the world today. Despite the urgent humanitarian crisis and ongoing discussions, the international community has thus far failed to achieve a workable, lasting solution.”
The complexity of the situation, the persistent of serious human rights violations, and the protected displacement of hundreds of thousands of people continue to present seemingly unrecoverable challenges, she added.

Criminology department chairperson Professor Ziaur Rahman presided over the function.
