Speaker condoles death of Kofi Annan

DHAKA, Aug 18, 2018 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury today mourned death of former Secretary General of United Nations
(UN) Kofi Annan.

Annan, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, died in
Switzerland today at the age of 80.

In a condolence message, the Speaker expressed her deep shock at the
death of Annan, a Ghanaian diplomat who served as UN Secretary General from
1997 to 2006.

Dr Chaudhury said: “During his lifetime, Kofi Annan worked for
establishing the world peace. He worked to resolve different global problems,
including the Myanmar government’s atrocities on Rohingya people.”

“World people will remember Kofi Annan forever with due respect for his
relentless efforts in modernising the United Nations and outstanding role in
humanitarian activities worldwide,” she said.

The Speaker said Annan’s key achievement was to fix and implement the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

She also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed
sympathy to the bereaved family.

In separate messages, Deputy Leader of the parliament Syeda Sajeda
Chowdhury, Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah and Chief Whip ASM Feroz also
mourned the death of Annan.
