More 9,703 families get Asrayan houses in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, June 20, 2021 (BSS) – More 9,703 homeless and landless families got 9,703 new houses today in Rangpur division as a gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina under the second phase of Asrayan-2 project in the Mujib Year.

The Prime Minister launched distribution of the houses with land ownership documents and keys to the ‘ka’ category beneficiary families today through a videoconferencing from her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital city.

Later, Members of Parliament, Deputy Commissioners and Upazila Nirbahi Officers handed over ownership of new 9,703 houses through distributing keys and land registration documents to homeless families in the second phase in the division today.

Earlier on January 23 last, the Prime Minister distributed 9,431 newly built houses out of 13,130 houses in the first phase among 9,431 landless and homeless families of all eight districts in Rangpur division through a videoconferencing.

Later, construction and distribution of the rest 3,699 houses were completed among the rest of 3,699 homeless families of the division in the first phase.

“The government built 13,130 houses spending Taka 224.18 crore and distributed those among 13,130 homeless families in the first phase of Asrayan-2 project in the division,” Abu Taher Md. Masud Rana, Additional Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) told BSS today.

The 9,703 new houses were distributed among 98,703 landless and homeless families in the second phase today out of a total of 12,436 houses, being built spending Taka 239.69 crore in the division in the second phase of Asrayan-2 project.

Construction of the rest of 2,733 houses out of total 12,436 in the second phase continues in full swing for distribution among 2,733 more families in the near future in the division so that none remained shelter-less within the ‘Mujib Year’ in the division.

“After completion of construction of a total of 25,566 h houses spending Taka 463.87 crore, 25,566 homeless and landless families will get those houses in Rangpur division in two phases,” Rana said.

He said the government is distributing the brick-built tin-shed semi-pucca houses among homeless families marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the Mujib Year to ensure shelters of all citizens.

A number of homeless families expressed happiness with emotional feelings to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after getting houses today with two bedrooms, one kitchen, one sanitary latrine, one utility space and veranda and electricity facilities.

Homeless couple Mahmuda Akhter, 28, and Sheikh Farid, 32, of village Paschim Boragari in Domar upazila of Nilphamari expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after getting a gift house from her today.

“We had no land. We had been living in rising sheds on the lands of others for 12 years. My landless husband used to support my family with two children on his income as an employee of a small tailor shop,” Mahmuda said.

“Now, my dream has come true after getting the gift house from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. I pray to Almighty Allah for her long life with sound health. The house has erased our frustration,” she said with a smiling face.

The couple is now busy decorating the house to live there happily with their two children.

Like Mahmuda, landless couple Sohel Rana, 50, and Majeda Begum, 40, of Madhya Panga village in Panga Motukpur union of Domar upazila got a gift house from the Prime Minister today.

Sohel Rana earns his living by driving a rickshaw. They lived with two sons and one daughter on other’s land for many years.

After getting the Prime Minister’s gift house, Majeda said, “I got married more than two decades ago. Now, I have my own house and addresses.”

Landless Abdul Matin, 30, and his wife Habiba Begum, 32, of Melapanga village and Begum Bewa, 50, of village Paschim Boragari in Domar upazila of Nilphamari have also got houses today.

Talking to BSS, Divisional Commissioner Md Abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan said the climate-resilient colorful houses have been constructed under a strict monitoring system ensuring quality of works.

“Asrayan Project, one of the Prime Minister’s 10 special initiatives, aims at ensuring shelter for all homeless people to help them rebuild life, improve living standard and health care and skill development on income generating activities,” he said.
