9,703 Asrayan houses ready for homeless in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, June 19, 2021 (BSS) – Some 9,703 houses are ready for handing
over to homeless families as a gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the
Mujib Year under the second phase of Asrayan-2 project in Rangpur division.

“The already selected 9,703 families will get the houses marking the
birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in
the Mujib Year,” Abu Taher Md. Masud Rana, Additional Divisional Commissioner
(Revenue) told BSS today.

The Prime Minister is likely to hand over ownership of the new 9,703
houses through distributing keys and land registration documents to 9,703
selected ‘ka’ category homeless families in the second phase through a
videoconferencing tomorrow.

“Earlier, the government allocated Taka 224.18 crore for construction of
13,130 houses in the first phase of Asrayan-2 project and Taka 239.69 crore
for construction of more 12,436 houses in the second phase of the project in
Rangpur division,” Rana said.

On January 23 last, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina distributed 9,431 newly
built houses out of 13,130 houses in the first phase among 9,431 landless and
homeless families of all eight districts in Rangpur division through a
videoconferencing.

Later, construction and distribution of the rest 3,699 houses were
completed gradually among more 3,699 homeless families of the division in the
first phase.

“Under the second phase, construction of 9,703 houses, out of total
12,436, has been completed,” Rana said, adding that the Prime Minister is
likely to distribute those among 9,703 homeless families tomorrow.

Construction of the rest 2,733 houses out of total 12,436 in the second
phase continues and those will be distributed among 2,733 families in the
near future in the division so that none remained shelter-less within the
‘Mujib Year’ in the division.

“After completion of construction and distribution of houses, a total of
25,566 homeless and landless families will get 25,566 houses built, spending
a total of Taka 463.87 crore in all eight districts of Rangpur division in
the Mujib Year,” Rana said.

Meanwhile, the selected beneficiary homeless families are eagerly
waiting to be rehabilitated in the colourful houses with corrugated iron
sheets on roofs, two bedrooms, one kitchen, one hygienic sanitary latrine,
one utility space and veranda tomorrow.

Talking to BSS, Divisional Commissioner Md Abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan said the
climate-resilient colorful houses have been constructed under a strict
monitoring system ensuring quality of works.

“Asrayan Project, one of the Prime Minister’s 10 special initiatives,
aims at ensuring shelter for all homeless people to help them rebuild life,
improve living standard and health care and skill development on income
generating activities,” he said.

Talking to BSS today, Taraganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer in Rangpur Md
Aminul Islam said 100 ‘ka’ category homeless families will get houses at four
Asrayan villages under the second phase of the Asrayan-2 project in the
upazila tomorrow.

“Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina distributed 200 houses among 200
homeless families by handing over land ownership documents through a
videoconferencing in the first phase in Taraganj upazila,” Islam added.
