Abahani, Mohammedan record victory in DPL after Shakib saga

DHAKA, June 13, 2021 (BSS) – The eighth round of Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL) saw the defending champions Ahabani Limited hit back in winning way from the defeat against archrivals Mohammedan Sporting Club.

After their captain Shakib Al Hasan was handed a three-match ban, Mohammedan won their match to keep the winning trend intact. Prime Doleshwar, Brothers Union, Gazi Group Cricketers and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club also won their respective matches at different venues across the city today.

Abahani vs Prime Bank

After losing their first big match of the season to Mohammedan, Abahani Limited got back to winning way, defeating Prime Bank Cricket Club by 30 runs through the DLS system at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The victory put Abahani level with Prime Bank with 12 points from eight matches in the point table of the DPL but the net-run-rate keeps the defending champions in second spot so far.

Electing to bat first, Abahani Limited compiled a hefty 183-5 with young opener Munim Shahriar, who batted from ball one to last ball, missing his ton by eight runs.

Prime Bank never could match with Abahani’s aggression and were 117-4 in 16 overs when rain arrived. After the game restarted their revised target was set 174 in 19 overs, which meant they needed 57 off 18 balls. However, they were limited to 143-6 in 19 overs to lose their only second game in the league.

Abahani who lost their previous match to archrivals Mohammedan through DLS system, started with bang thanks to Munim who clattered nine fours and five sixes in his whirlwind 50 ball-92 not out.

In fact, all of Abahani’s top batsmen provided him the support to rally the side. Munim’s fellow opener Naim Sheikh hit 29 off 27 while Nazmul Hossain Shanto struck 21 ball-30 with two fours and as many sixes.

Skipper Tamim Iqbal struck 55 off 41 with eight fours and one six to give the side a good start but Abahani bowlers regrouped well in the midst of the innings to stall their progress. Mohammad Mithun was the other notable scorer for Prime Bank with 34 off 27.

Mohammedan vs Old DOHS

Irfan Sukkur struck a brilliant 68 not out as Mohammedan Sporting Club clinched a 9-run victory over Old DOHS by DLS system despite the absence of the star player and regular captain Shakib Al Hasan at BKSP-4 ground.

Mohammedan came into the match after Shakib was handed three-match ban and a fine of Tk. 5 lakh for kicking and throwing down the stumps in the previous match against traditional rivals Abahani Limited.

However, his absence mattered little as Mohammedan secured the fifth and second straight victory after three-match losing streak in the DPL to keep them strongly in the race of Super League.

Being sent to bat first, Mohammedan put up a decent 159-5, riding on Sukkur’s 42 ball-68 not out, that included three fours and five sixes. After the rain stopped the game for a while after 13.4 overs of the DOHS innings, their revised target was set 125 in 13.4 overs but they were able to score 115-4.

Mohammedan kept them in fourth position in the point table so far with 10 points from eight matches. DOHS are in ninth position with five points from the same number of matches.

Sheikh Jamal vs Legends of Rupganj

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club secured a seven-run victory over Legends of Rupganj by DLS system for their fifth victory at BKSP-3 ground.

Electing to bat first, Legends of Rupganj posted 137-6 but they failed to defend it as Jamal’s captain Nurul Hasan Sohan and opener Shykat Ali kept the side ahead always in DLS method.

Sohan was not out on 44 off 30 while Shykat scored 43, playing the same number of balls as Jamal was 127-4 in 18 overs before the rain brought an end to the game. As per DLS method, Jamal’s needed 120 in 18 overs and since they were ahead by seven runs, they were declared the winner.

Prime Doleshwar vs Partex

Fazle Mahmud hit 57 bal-71 as Prime Doleshwar recorded a five-wicket victory over Partex Sporting Club at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

While this was Doleshwar’s fifth victory in eighth game that put them in the third spot so far, Partex now tasted their eighth straight defeat to be languished at the bottom table.

Being sent to bat first, Partex were restricted to 134-7 with opener Hasanuzzaman clobbering the highest 29 ball-44 runs knock.

Despite being two wickets down for one run in the second over, Doleshwar raced to the victory with 136-5, keeping four balls in hand.

Brothers vs Shinepukur

Opener Mizanur Rahman hit an unbeaten 79 runs knock as Brothers Union edged Shinepukur Cricket Club past by just one-run to record their fourth victory through DLS system at BKSP-3 ground.

Opting to bat first, Shinepukur posted 150-3 with both captain Towhid Hridoy and Sabbir Hossain making identical 44-run.

Brothers were 132-4 in 18 overs when rain put an end to the game. As per DLS method, by then, Brothers needed 131 runs to win in 18 overs and they were one run ahead.
