DHAKA, June 12, 2021 (BSS) – The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) banned celebrated allrounder Shakib Al Hasan for three matches and also fined him Taka 5 lakh (USD 6100) for kicking and throwing down the stumps in a Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match.

Kazi Inam Ahmed, the chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) said Shakib accepted the sanction and hence further hearing was not needed.

He also said that the ban will be effective with immediate effect.

“As per the code of conduct of BCB, it’s a Level 3 offence for which the match referee banned him for three matches and fined him Taka 5 lakh,” Inam said here today.

“This will be effective with immediate effect which means he wouldn’t be available for the next three matches of Mohammedan.”

Mohammedan Sporting Club cricket committee chairman Masuduzzaman earlier said that they learnt that the umpires committee has recommended a four-match ban on Shakib.

”We have not got any official letter as of now but we came to know that the umpires committee recommended four-match ban,” Masuduzzaman told the media today.

But Inam said they took the necessary steps based on the report of the match referee.

“I don’t know what they said but I got the report of match referee where it was stated that he should be banned for three matches and fined with Tk. 5 lakh for breaching the code of conduct. The report was sent to Shakib and he accepted the sanction,” Inam remarked.

It was expected that Shakib’s repeated misdemeanor would cause a greater punishment this time around. But Inam said the punishment was given as per the level of the offence.

“There is a code of conduct and the match referee took the decision based on that.”

Shakib who was leading Mohammedan against their archrivals Abahani Limited lost temper twice on the ground.

When his leg-before wicket appeal against Abahani skipper Mushfiqur Rahim was turned down by umpire Imran Parvez, Shakib furiously went up at the umpires and vented his anger by kicking the stumps.

In the following over, when umpires asked the covers to be brought on with dark clouds hovering around, Shakib lost his coolness and uprooted the stumps and then threw it down. Later, he fixed the stumps.

Shakib also got into altercation with Khaled Mahmud Sujon, the Abahani coach who is also the director of the BCB, while going towards to the dressing room. However, before the situation went out of the control, players and officials from both teams calmed them down.

Later, Shakib went to Abahani’s dressing room and resolved the matter before returning to the field when the game resumed.

Shakib also apologized to the fans through a statement on his official Facebook page after the match.

Earlier, Shakib got away with a simple warning despite breaching the bio-Secure environment during the ongoing DPL as he decided to call two additional net bowlers from his own cricket academy during his individual training session at the BCB indoor training facility.

It was not the first time that Shakib got into troubles. He was suspended by BCB for six months in 2014 for attitude problems that included a lewd gesture on TV, beating a spectator in the stadium, and travelling to the Caribbean Premier League without a clearance.

Shakib was banned by the International Cricket Council for two years in 2019, with one year of that suspended, due to his failure to report corrupt approaches from bookies. He only came back to national duty earlier this year with the series against West Indies.
