Farmers happy over litchi production in Panchagarh

PANCHAGARH, June 12, 2021(BSS)–Farmers are happy over litchi production in the district as they are getting much yield beyond expectation.

The delicious fruit has already arrived in the local markets in the district.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said the commercial cultivation of litchi started here about 10 years ago and is increasing every year.

Some 1000 hectares of land has been brought under litchi cultivation in the district this year whereas it was 850 hectares last year, they said.

Around 525 tonnes of litchi might be produced from per hectare this year, they added.

However, Litchi is cultivated on around 1500 hectares of land this year.

Five varieties of litchi are grown by the farmers in district. These are local variety, China 2, 3 and 4 and Bombay.

China 2, 3 and 4 are on great demand in markets. A bundle of 50 local variety litchi is being sold at Taka 100 to 150 in the markets here.

Farmer Abdul Malek of Dangapara village under Debiganj upazila told BSS he sold all litchi from an orchard on 2 acres of land at Taka 3 lakh to the wholesaler.

Md Mizanur Rahman, deputy director of DAE, said Litchi outcome is good this year.

Production will be increasing if the farmers use balanced fertilizers in their orchards, he said, adding DAE provides technical supports to the growers.
