Ziaur emerges unbeaten champions

DHAKA, June 9, 2021 (BSS) – GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh qualified in the FIDE World Cup Chess as he emerged unbeaten champion in the SAIF POWERTEC Asian Zonal Chess Championship (Hybrid Chess), qualifying event for the FIDE World Cup Chess, that concluded today at Asia Hotel & Resorts in the city.

GM Zia earned eight points out of nine matches and clinched the title.

The FIDE World Cup Chess will begin from July 10 in Sochi, Russia.

GM Enamul Hossain Razib became runner-up with 7.5 points.

Six players earned six points each, in tie-breaking system their positions are 3rd- CM Liyanage Ranindu Dilshan of Sri Lanka, 4th- CM Manon Reja Neer of Bangladesh, 5th- IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman of Bangladesh, 6th-FM Khandaker Aminul Islam of Bangladesh, 7th-Mohammad Minhaz Uddin of Bangladesh and 8th AACB Amarasinge of Sri Lanka.

In the day’s ninth and last round matches, GM Ziaur Rahman split point with CM Manon Reja Neer, GM Enamul Hossain Razib split point with CM Liyanage Ranindu Dilshan, IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman beat CM Sohel Chowdhury, IM Mohammad Minhaz Uddin beat IM Abu Sufian Shakil, FM Mehdi Hasan Parag split with FM Subrota Biswas, Amarasinghe beat De Silve, FM Khandaker Aminul Islam beat Anata Choudhury.

The event was held in a nine round Swiss-league system and thirty-nine players from Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka took part in the meet.

The prize distribution ceremony of the championship will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at Shapla Hall in Bangladesh Police Head-quarter at 3.30 pm.
