Mystery shrouds DU student’s death

DHAKA, June 6, 2021 (BSS) – Mystery shrouded the death of a female student of Dhaka University (DU) as her body was recovered from a bathroom of a building in Government Residential Quarters at Plassey of Lalbagh Police Station here early today.

Police, DU authorities and hospital sources said the reason behind the death of Israt Jahan Srishti will be unearthed immediately after getting the autopsy report as her body was sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue.

Hailed from Netrokona district, Srishti was a student of English Department of DU, said a medical source.

DU Proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabbani told BSS that Israt Jahan was a second year student of English Department of Dhaka University.

He said firefighters salvaged her body after breaking the door of the bathroom on the ground floor of the eight-storey building No. 18/2 of Plassey Government Quarters at about 7:30 am.

Station officer of Plassey Fire Station Saiful Islam said, “Israt Jahan used to live in that building. We got a phone call in the National Emergency Service 999 this morning. The bathroom’s door was found closed and the fire service personnel broke the door open and took her out.”

“Israt and her fellow mates used to live renting a sublet . . . Last night Israt went to bathroom to take a shower after getting wet by rain. But she did not come out of the bathroom all night. Later she was rescued from that bathroom,” Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lalbagh Police Station KM Ashraf Uddin told BSS.

The OC added: “We are waiting for medical report. The exact cause behind her death will be known after receiving the autopsy report.”
