DPL: Mohammedan defy Mustafizur to record third victory in a row

DHAKA, June 5, 2021 (BSS)—Mohammedan Sporting Club picked up their third straight victory in the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL), cruising past Prime Bank Cricket Club by 27 runs, despite a five-wicket haul of Mustafizur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Club today.

A match, that was dubbed as the battle between Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, youngster Parvez Hossain Emon drew the headline for his ruthless half-century in the slow pitch.

Emon blasted a 38 ball-50, hitting three fours and four sixes as Shakib-led Mohammedan posted 150-8. Tamim’s Prime Bank however were bowled out for 123 in 19.3 overs to concede their first defeat after beating Gazi Group Cricketers by seven wickets and Shinepukur Cricket Club by three wickets in the first two matches.

Mohammedan won their first game against Shinepukur by three wickets before crushing Partex Sporting Club by six wickets in the second game.

Mohammedan who elected to bat first could have amassed more imposing total on the board had Mustafizur not intervened. The left-arm pacer particularly found this wicket to his likings as it assisted to make his cutter and slower deadlier.

But before then Emon came hard on Prime Bank bowlers to give the side a flying start. As he was dismissed on 50, Mohammedan were 98-2 in 13th overs. Nevertheless the other batsmen couldn’t capitalize on Emon’s start due to Mustafizur deadly bowling. The Fizz as he was adorably called finished with 5-22, which is his first five-for in domestic cricket.

Shamsur Rahman was the other notable scorer with 33 while Mahmudul Hasan made 23. Skipper Shakib chipped-in-with 22.

In pursuit of the target, Prime Bank banked on skipper Tamim to get a good start but the opener was out on run-a-ball-20. From then on, Prime lost wickets in regular interval to concede their first defeat in their first big game in the season. Mohammad Mithun was the top-scorer for them with 25.

Shakib though again failed to deliver big score with willow, he was economical in bowling, ending with 2-16 in four overs. Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed (3-15) and Abu Jayed Rahi (3-33) however was the most successful bowler for Mohammedan with three wickets apiece.
