Bangladesh play 1-1 draw with Afghanistan

DHAKA, June 3, 2021 (BSS)- It was an impressive performance by Bangladesh as they came from behind and forced Afghanistan to play a 1-1 goal draw in their second leg of FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifiers held today at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha.

The match was locked goalless after the breather.

In the first half, Bangladesh were seen busy handling the series of attacks of Afghanistan though they did not concede any goal due to the compact defense of Bangladesh.

But, the red-green jersey holders fell behind in the beginning of the second half when Afghan striker Amir Sharifi gave his team a deserving lead in the 48th minute of the match.

Bangladesh played a relatively well-organized match creating some real scoring chances at the end of the second half and finally got the reap when defender Topu Barman brought Bangladesh in match scoring a goal in the 84th minute.

Afghanistan dominated the ball possession as well as the attacks. They went ahead at the beginning of the second half in that series. However, the Jamie Day’s men did not give up hope as they finally split points with the Afghans in the joint qualifiers of the World Cup and Asian Cup with the great goal of Topu Barman.

With the day’s outcome, Bangladesh remained at bottom-rank at the group E point table with two point while Afghanistan also remained at third position with five points.

Bangladesh will play their next matches of the World Cup qualifiers against India and Oman on June 7 and 15 respectively at the same venue.

In the first leg, Bangladesh suffered a solitary goal defeat to Afghanistan held in Dushanbe.
