“We will give priority to the areas where water logging has occurred in today’s rainfall and we will be able to bring the water logging to a tolerable level in the next two years… Our expectation is to save the people of Dhaka from this misery,” Taposh said.

He said that after assuming the office on December 31 last year, waste removal activities by DSCC started from January 2 from banks of the of canals including Jirani, Manda, Shampur, Kalunagar canals and Panthapath and Segunbagicha box culverts.

“So far, more than 1.3 lakh metric tons of waste and 7.69 lakh metric tons of alluvium have been removed from these canals and box culverts. In addition, three pump machines of the two non-functioning pump stations have been commissioned from WASA .” He added.

Works are also underway to clean the blocked sewerage and open sewerage received by WASA and it is targeted to be completed by this June, Taposh said.

Mayor said 85 mm of rainfall was recorded from 6 am to 9 am today, which has resulted in water logging in several places, but it is much less in amount and number of places than the past.”

“Due to the activities taken by the corporation in the last 5 months and the activities of our officers and employees at the field level from this morning, the rain water has receded rapidly,” Taposh said and he thanked the officers and employees.

He said, ‘Usually, the accumulation of water in a place for more than three hours is portrayed as water logging. In today’s rain we have been able to drain almost 100 percent of the water in three hours although our goal is to drain the rain water in one hour .
