Concerted efforts needed to protect women’s health: Speaker

DHAKA, May 29, 2021 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin
Sharmin Chowdhury today said that besides socio-economic empowerment
of women, concerted efforts are needed to ensure their health and
well-being.

She was speaking as the chief guest a week-long online event
organized by ‘Travelettes of Bangladesh-Bhramanakanya’ on the occasion
of ‘Mental Health Awareness Week’, said a release.

“The ‘Travelettes of Bangladesh-Bhramanakanya’ has been working in
various ways to ensure women’s empowerment in Bangladesh since 2016.
This non-profit organization started working for the empowerment of
numerous talented women-mothers-sisters scattered in the remote areas
of Bangladesh,” she said.

The Speaker said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken many
timely initiatives, including installation of toilets for female
students in educational institutions in remote areas… The government
is working tirelessly to ensure the health and safety of women.”

Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that women’s reproductive health
is a very important fundamental issue.

“With the importance of women’s health, Bhramanakanya has so far
conducted awareness programs like women’s empowerment, women’s rights
among about 52,000 students of 102 institutions across Bangladesh,
which is highly commendable. As a result of this initiative, women
have gained health protection knowledge as well as increased their
self-confidence and self-reliance,” she added.

Hosted by Dr. Sakia Haque and Dr. Manasi Saha, the virtual event in
the capital Dhaka was attended by Chou Yuji from Malaysia, Dr. Abre
Azumah from the United States, Dr. Opiemi Ademi from Nigeria, Iris
Jolantima, Namita Krul from India and Nokuzola Wande from South
Africa.
