NARSINGDI, May 26, 2021 (BSS) – About 65,500 tonnes of summer vegetables are expected to be produced in the district this season.

Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Shovan Kumar Dhar told BSS that if the favourable climate condition prevails in the couple of weeks next, the estimated production target will be achieved.

He said some 68,200 hectares of land has been brought under summer vegetables cultivation in the six upazilas of the district in the current season while 65,500 hectares was in the previous year.

The deputy director said the DAE encouraged the farmers to cultivate poison free vegetables using organic fertilizers instead of chemical ones.

Now, the farmers are cultivating poison free vegetables in the district as they have cultivated chemical free vegetables over 1500 hectares of land this year, he said.

Various kinds of summer vegetables like lady’s finger, bitter gourd, koida, cucumber, pointed gourd, long bean (borboti), pumkin, brinjal, sponge gourd (dondul), puishak, datashak, arum, drumstick etc grow aplenty in Shibpur, Belabo, Raipura and Sadar upazilas of the district.

Narsingdi, a vegetable surplus district, usually supplies 30 to 40 percent of its total production to the capital and other districts after meeting the local demand.

A number of poor families in different upazilas became self-reliant economically through vegetables farming in the last couple of years.
