65-day marine fishing ban begins tomorrow

DHAKA, May 19, 2021 (BSS) – A 65-day restriction on fishing in the
Bay of Bengal will begin tomorrow with an aim to boost marine fish
production.

The fishing restriction will remain effective from May 20 to July 23.

Earlier, on April 15 last, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock
issued a notification to this end under the Section 3 of the Marine
Fisheries Act, 2020 for proper breeding, production and conservation
of marine fisheries resources in the country’s marine waters.

Catching all types of marine fish has been prohibited during the
period. All commercial trawlers have been asked to abide by the ban.

The government has been implementing the fishing ban programme each
year since 2015.

On Tuesday, a special meeting on fishing ban programme was held in
the capital with Fisheries and Livestock Minister S M Rezaul Karim in
the chair, a ministry press release said.

Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Raunak Mahmud, additional
secretaries of the ministry Shaymal Chandra Karmakar and Md Toufiqul
Arif, director general of the Fisheries Department Kazi Shams Afroz,
additional IGP of Naval Police Md Atiqul Islam and representatives
from different government agencies were present at the meeting.
