Hasina came as a beacon of unity on May 17: Bahauddin Nasim

DHAKA, May 17, 2021 (BSS)- Awami League joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim today said that Sheikh Hasina appeared as the beacon of unity of Awami League on her homecoming day on May 17, 1981.

“She (Hasina) came to awaken and unite the people of Bangladesh…If she hadn’t returned that day, we would not have been able to come to this stage,” Nasim said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized by Awami Swechchhasebak League at the National Press Club auditorium today on the occasion of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Homecoming Day.

“40 years ago, there was a terrible misery in the national life and political life of Bangladesh. There was no democracy in the country. The father of the nation was killed along with his family, our four national leaders were killed.” Nasim said recalling the horrifying events of the past.

Referring Sheikh Hasina as essential for Bangladesh today, he said that even after Bangabandhu’s daughter became the president of Awami League, dictator Ziaur Rahman forbade her to come to the country.

“But Sheikh Hasina, ignoring the fear of death, came to the country to build a democratic, developed and prosperous Bangladesh, to materialize the dream of the father of the nation.” He added.

“Sheikh Hasina returned to the country, and set an example of determination by trialing the killers of Bangabandhu and saved the nation from getting stigmatized,” Nasim said.

Shyamal Dutta, editor of the daily Bhorer Kagoj, addressed the meeting as a special guest under the chairmanship of Nirmal Ranjan Guha, president of Swachchasebak League and Afzalur Rahman Babu, general secretary.

Swechchhasebak League co-presidents Gazi Mejbaul Hossain Sachchu, M Abdur Razzak and Kazi Shahidullah Liton, joint general secretaries Mobasher Chowdhury and Khairul Hasan Jewel, organizing secretary Nafiul Karim Nafa, office secretary Azizul Haque Aziz and Dhaka Metropolitan South president Kamrul Hasan were also present at the occasion.
