World Hypertension Day tomorrow

DHAKA, May 16, 2021 (BSS) – Tomorrow is the World Hypertension Day. The main aim of the day is to educate the public and increase awareness of hypertension, which is also commonly known as high blood pressure.

As a member of the ‘World Hypertension League’, the Hypertension Committee of the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh has been celebrating the day with various arrangements since 2006. But due to the sudden rise of Covid-19 cases in the country, this year no programs will be held to celebrate the day.

According to the latest ‘Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2017-18’, high blood pressure/hypertension increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. 1 out of every 4 adults in Bangladesh suffers from high blood pressure, says the survey.

To keep the heart healthy and blood pressure under control, it is important to develop healthy eating and healthy living habits. In this case, the elimination of toxic chemical called ‘Trans-fat’ from food can be an important step.

In a response to World Hypertension Day 2021, ABM Jubayer, Executive Director of Pragya (Knowledge for Progress), said that, “Non-communicable diseases are taking a terrible shape in our country. Eliminating trans-fat in food is undoubtedly a cost-effective measure for the government.”

It will not only reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases, but will also play a role in reducing the government’s health care expenditure, he said.
