DHAKA, May 09, 2021 (BSS) – Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will not go abroad for treatment as the law ministry said that the convicted accused has no chance to go abroad.
“The law ministry gave the opinion in response to a petition filed by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s brother Shamim Iskander seeking medical treatment abroad,” he told reporters at his ministry office.
Kamal said that according to the opinion of the law ministry, their (Khaleda Zia’s brother) application could not be granted, adding, “I have done as much as I have to do according to the law. But we can’t do anything outside the law.”
“Khaleda Zia was undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital due to COVID-19 contact. Her younger brother Shamim Iskander applied for taking Khaleda Zia abroad. We sent it to the law ministry for the opinion. You know that too,” he said.
Today, the opinion came from the Law Ministry and made it clear that the government gave Begum Khaleda Zia the scope to receive treatment staying at her residence by suspending the sentence under section 401, the minister said.
He added that according to the existing law there is no opportunity to pardon her and send abroad.
Earlier in the morning, the law ministry sent the file back to the home ministry with comments on Khaleda Zia’s request to be sent abroad for treatment.
