DHAKA, May 08, 2021 (BSS) – Refuting concerns of so-called environmentalists and intellectuals for trees of capital’s Suhrawardy Udyan, Awami League presidium member Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak today said where they were at the time when Ziaur Rahman wiped away the monuments of War of Liberation from the udyan by setting up Shishu Park there.

“They (environmentalists and intellectuals) were nowhere to be found when Ziaur Rahman wiped away the monuments of the War of Liberation from there. They did not raise any opposition. It is sad,” he said.

Nanak said these while addressing a function to distribute Eid gifts among the staff of National Press Club and Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Jahangir Kabir Nanak said a grand project has been taken to set up infrastructures at Suhrawardy Udyan to reach the history of War of Liberation to generation after generation.

“The Racecourse Maydan of Pakistan tenure became a historic place after Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his historic speech on March 7, 1971, there. It became Suhrawardy Udyan after independence. Bangabandhu planted a sapling there after his return to the country,” he said.

The Awami League leader said the places, from where Bangabandhu delivered his Historic March 7 speech and where the occupying Pakistani army surrendered in 1971, were ceremonially destroyed.

“Zia intentionally tried to wipe away the monuments of the War of Liberation from Suhrawardy Udyan by setting up Shishu Park there,” he added.

Presided over by Awami League relief and social welfare sub-committee chairman AKM Rahmatullah, the programme was attended by Awami League joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, organizing secretary Mirza Azam, former president of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, National Press Club president Farida Yasmin and general secretary Elias Khan, among others.

The programme was conducted by Awami League relief and social welfare sub-committee secretary Sujit Roy Nandi.
