Wheat procurement drive begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, May 8, 2021 (BSS)- Wheat procurement drive began in Gobindaganj upazila here yesterday amid much enthusiasm to the farmers and the agro-official concerned.

A virtual function, organised by Upazila Food Office, was held with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Sayeed in the chair.

Local lawmaker Engineer Monowar Hossain Chowdhury addressed the webinar and formally inaugurated the wheat procurement drive in the upazila as the chief guest while Upazila Chairman Abdul Latif Prodhan spoke at the event as a special guest.

Earlier, Upazila Controller of Food Swapon Dey made a welcome speech and said a total of 269 tonnes of wheat would be procured from the farmers at the directives of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“The price of per kilogram of wheat has been fixed at Taka 28,” he said, adding that a selected farmer might sell one tonnes of wheat to the food department.

In this regard, the interested farmers of the upazila applied through ‘Krishoker Apps’ and later the lottery was held to select the farmers’ name at the conference room of the UNO on May 04, he further said.

According to the names of selected farmers through online lottery, the wheat would be procured from them, he continued.

Engineer Monowar Hossain said as Sheikh Hasina’s government is farmers friendly, the government took the initiative to purchase paddy and wheat from the farmers directly considering their welfare and help them to earn economic profit.

Talking to the BSS District Controller of Food Reajur Rahman Raju said a total of 923 tonnes of wheat would be procured in all the seven upazilas of the district this year.

“The price of per maund (40 KGs) of wheat has been fixed at Taka 1,120,” he said, adding that other six Upazila Controllers of Food should have to start wheat procurement drive without any delay.
