Democracy reestablished with Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming: Hasan

DHAKA, May 7, 2021 (BSS) – Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr
Hasan Mahmud today said democracy was reestablished in the country
after the homecoming of Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Father of the
Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in 2007.

He said this while exchanging views with journalists at the Awami
League President’s political office in Dhanmondi this afternoon.

Hasan, also the Awami League joint general secretary, said the
leader of commoners, Sheikh Hasina, returned home from the United
Kingdom via the United States in 2007, ignoring the restrictions of
the then government.

“You know, the army-backed government imposed restriction on the
homecoming of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after receiving
treatment abroad. Not only that, it sent letters to all the airlines
to this end and filed false cases against her,” he said.

The information minister said Sheikh Hasina then uttered that she
wanted to face those cases at court and the restriction on her home
return was never acceptable.

Despite sensing threats to her life, he said, the daughter of
Bangabandhu took risk and returned home.

“And with her return, democracy was reestablished in the country
through struggle,” Hasan added.

Then, he said, the AL-led alliance achieved a landslide victory in
the December 29 elections in 2008 that led the country towards the
path of democracy and development.

“That’s why the homecoming of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina
means the return of the democracy in the country,” Hasan said.
