DUJ demands salary and full bonus for journalists before Eid-ul Fitr

DHAKA, Apr 30, 2021 (BSS) – Leaders of the Dhaka Union of Journalist (DUJ) today urged the media owners to pay full bonus and salary of the journalists within this week before the Eid-ul Fitr.

“The full bonus and salary must have to be paid within the current week before the Eid-ul Fitr festival, otherwise the media owners have to bear responsibilities for any kind of unexpected situation in the media industry,” a DUJ statement said here.

DUJ president Quddus Afrad and its general secretary Sajjad Alam Khan Topu made this demand in a statement issued here marking the International Labour Day.

The DUJ leaders also warned of staging ‘sit-in strike’ during the Eid day, if necessary, to expose the attitude of the media owners before the world.

“We are observing with regret that activities detrimental to journalists’ interest are being happened in the news media. Termination, curtailment of salary and allowance, even reluctance to pay salary in due time are being occurred, making the livelihoods of the working journalists difficult amid the coronavirus situation,” DUJ leaders said on the eve of the May Day.

Calling the media owners to stop all ill activities immediately, the DUJ leaders said some 60 journalists have already died of corona virus and many journalists and their families are suffering, but a large number of media outlets are making a dilly-dally in paying regular salary to the journalists and employees.

Even many renowned newspapers and television channels are still pending December –January salary, they said.

It is a criminal offense and inhuman as per the labour law, the DUJ statement added.

On May Day, the DUJ will hold a discussion at the DUJ office at 3:30pm.
